Genevac evaporators are designed to be as flexible as possible. Available options and accessories include an extensive range of sample holders, designed to provide maximum protection of samples and faster drying times, and sample handling tools such as SampleGenie™ that improve laboratory workflow. Options such as HCl resistance and Inert Gas Purge are available to protect operators, samples and systems.

Sample Holders

evaporators are designed to combine rapid and safe evaporation with high capacity and a wide variety of sample formats. In order to optimise the evaporation performance achieved it is important to select the correct sample holder for your particular application. Genevac samples holders are manufactured from solid aluminium to very precise specifications and are mass balanced to ensure smooth running of the evaporator.

SampleGenie

Drying Large Volumes Directly into Vials

SampleGenie technology, in conjunction with Genevac Rocket Synergy, HT and EZ-2 series evaporators, enables large sample volumes to be dried directly into vials, eliminating a number of time-consuming sample handling steps and the attendant risk of errors.

Traditionally protocols for concentration of chromatographic fractions have involved drying multiple fractions in an evaporator, re-suspending pooled fractions into a single vial and then re-drying before storage and analysis. Even with modern centrifugal evaporators such processes typically take 2-3 days to complete. Now fractions can be pooled into a SampleGenie flask and dried directly into a submission vial in one evaporation run.

JetRotors

miVac are the only vacuum concentrators of their class to be supplied with rotors made from solid aluminium. The JetRotors range provides very high performance concentration compared to rotors made from plastic, or of an open construction. Speed increases compared with polypropylene types range between 40% and 200%, depending on sample format.

HCI Resistance

Genevac evaporators are robust systems designed to be resistant to the most common solvents and acids used within the chemistry laboratory, including TFA, DCM (methylene chloride), and DMSO.

For laboratories who wish to use strong acid chlorides, special models of Genevac systems exist which are specifically designed to be resistant to these highly corrosive acids. Some manufacturers claim that their unmodified systems are resistant to HCl, however the experience of Genevac engineers shows that to be truly suitable for routine evaporation of acid chlorides special resistant materials such as Hastelloy® and PTFE must be used in place of materials which would suffer from HCl attack.  Materials such as these are used in Genevac HCl resistant systems.
Genevac HCl resistant systems must be used in conjunction with suitable vapour handlingand/or neutralising apparatus. Despite the efficiency of Genevac condensers HCl vapour does pass through the system and must be ducted safely away. HCl cannot be used in any Genevac system other than those specifically designed for the purpose.
HCl resistant systems are designed for use with high concentrations (e.g. 6N) of HCl and Thionyl Chloride.  HCl resistant versions of the HT-4X, HT-12 and EZ-2 evaporators are available.  The third generation EZ-2 Plus, HCl resistant, is also able to evaporate samples containing concentrated Nitric Acid – only this model EZ-2 can do this, please do not try to evaporate Nitric Acid in any other Genevac system.  If you are not sure of the compatibility of your system for any acid or solvent, please contact Genevac before using it in your system.

Inert Gas Purge

When working with highly explosive solvents, those with a low flash point, very low auto-ignition temperature and a wide range over which the solvent will flash there is potential for an explosion to occur inside the evaporator.  To eliminate this risk, Genevac offer the Inert Gas Purge (IGP) option which purges the air from the evaporator using an inert gas prior to commencing the evaporation process.  It is at the beginning of the evaporation process where most risk of explosion exists, i.e. when there is a mixture of solvent vapour and oxygen in the evaporation chamber.  The IGP may be locked on by the Laboratory Supervisor forcing all users to use the facility.
The IGP is available with the EZ-2 Series, the Rocket, and all HT Series evaporators.  IGP must be used whenever using highly explosive solvents, such as:
  • Carbon disulfide
  • Diethyl ether
  • 1,2-dimethoxyethane
  • 2-ethoxyethanol
  • Hydrogen cyanide
  • Pentane
  • Triethylsilane
The IGP option can also be useful where an inert atmosphere is required to help protect dry samples from moisture and/or oxygen exposure at the end of the evaporation process.  The IGP module controls gasses entering the evaporator, therefore at the end of the evaporation process, instead of releasing the vacuum by letting air into the chamber, inert gas is introduced instead.  The inert gas atmosphere is then maintained until the user opens the system to claim their dry samples.
The IGP unit does not control the atmosphere outside of the vapour path of the evaporator.  Genevac evaporators must be used in a safe, inert atmosphere.  For further details please review the Genevac Atex Statement.  As with any laboratory proceedure, the user must complete their own full risk assesment before proceeding with the work.

Exalt Controlled Crystallisation

Exalt is a new technology developed by Genevac with partners in the field of pharmaceutical small molecule crystallisation. Exalt enables a wide range of solvents to be evaporated at the same time, and all at the same slow rate and is used for polymorph screening and stable form identification. Therefore, DCM and Toluene can be placed in the same system and evaporated such that both samples dry at the same time. Exalt may be used for up to 3ml of solvent within the boiling point of 40ºC to 165ºC – DCM to DMAc. The evaporation time can be controlled to range from 6 hours to 72 hours, or more, as required for most solvents in this boiling point range. The system can deliver polymorphs of a drug at the same time, in a controlled and reproducible way

Exalt uses a special holder for vials which allows a selection of baffles to be placed on top of the vial to slow the evaporation rate of the volatile solvents. Size and number of baffles are selected to be most restrictive for the most volatile solvents, and least restrictive to the less volatile solvents. In some cases no baffle is required. The holder is then placed in a Genevac HT series evaporator which cycles the samples at atmosphere and at a slightly reduced pressure for the duration of the process.

Infinity Trolley

Infinity is a modular trolley, designed to accommodate a range of Genevac evaporation equipment in a number of configurations to suit customer requirements. It minimizes the footprint of the supported system, freeing valuable bench or fume hood space and allows the system to be moved easily for service access.
